James Cook University referred to as JCU originally belonged to the University of Queensland, and was officially established in 1970 as James Cook University. The academy is named after the notorious 18th-century British tar and discoverer, Captain James Cook, who was the first tar and discoverer to map the eastern seacoast of Australia.
